Many factors are driving the aviation industry to employ the use of composite materials; fuel cost and green initiatives. This has been a slow and intensive switch for aircraft manufacturers, mechanics, and airlines. In 2005, it was reported that somewhere between 30-40% of aircraft components were made of composites. Today, it ranges from 50-70%.
In 2012, Boeing rolled out the 787 Dreamliner, boasting that it was composed of upwards of 50% composites. Almost all aircraft that are developed today incorporate composites in some way.
